“WOMEN, PEACE AND SECURITY” MEETING |
|
|
October 21, 2004 New York:
United Nations Security Council held an informal meeting with members of the Security Council and seven NGOs, to discuss the status of implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace and Security,” in light of the forthcoming Secretary-General’s report on this issue.
According to the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 this meeting was held to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the adoption of SRC 1325, “Women, Peace and Security.”

The United Nations acknowledges that crucial to such a discussion is the role of civil society in promoting and monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of SCR 1325. This meeting was held also to illustrate to Security Council members how improved co-ordination between the UN and civil society can further strengthen this implementation.
Plenty of time was ensured for the Council members to question NGOs and to have a good discussion.
Among the invited NGO participants at the SCR 1325 meeting were:
Dr Saran Daraba Kaba, First President, Mano River Women's Peace Network - (Women’s participation in peace negotiations and the implementation of the peace accords, and the impact of small arms proliferation on women)
Mr Gerry Martone, International Rescue Committee- (Applying a gender perspective to humanitarian operations.)
Ms Espérance Kanani, President, Ndabaga Association, Rwanda- (Gender and DDR programmes)
Ms Shqipe Malushi, Executive Director, Albanian American Women's Organization - (Women's participation in peace building)
Ms Suzanne Samson Jambo, NGO Coordinator, New Sudanese Indigenous Network - (Gender-based violence: lessons from Sudan)
Mr Ian Martin, Vice President, International Center for Transitional Justice - (Gender and justice issues)
Ms Cora True-Frost, Coordinator, NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security - (SCR1325 implementation: recommendations across the UN system and at national level)

The Security Council will be holding an open debate on October 28, 2004 convened by the President of the Security Council for October, the United Kingdom.

This year, the open debate will primarily focus on one particular issue covered by SCR 1325- gender based violence in conflict situations. It was proposed to use the opportunity or aria-style meeting to look more broadly at the range of prevention, participation and protection issues covered by SCR 1325 and which will be addressed in the Secretary-General’s report.
